SKILLS FOR SUCCESS
PRO-CHALLENGE
(Spring 2006)
THE PROGRAM:
The Skills for
Success Pro-Challenge is a program designed to coach students in the
City of Syracuse between the ages of 14 and 19 to prepare them for
college or entry into the workforce. The program involves ten weeks of
coaching by Syracuse University students to help youth develop
professional skills in ten basic skill areas as outlined in Professor
William D. Coplin’s book 10 Things Employers Want You to Learn in
College.
THE PRO-CHALLENGE:
At the end of
the ten weeks, participants who have completed the program compete in
the Pro-Challenge where the skills they have worked on are tested in all
ten areas, including a presentation judged by local professionals.
THE AWARDS:
All competing
students receive awards for completing the program. Those with the
highest scores are awarded more significant scholarships.
TESTIMONIAL:
“I just want to
say thanks again. So much has happened because of the Pro-Challenge. I
got a job at Dunk and Bright furniture store. I am creating the Web
site for them. It’s a lot of fun. I increased my typing skills by 10
words, I was at 24, now I’m at 34. I am still practicing. At my job,
the old ladies call me a computer geek, but I say so what, I enjoy being
on the computer.” - 2005 Participant
THE FUTURE:
The Fall
semester serves as a planning and recruitment period for the Skills for
Success Pro-Challenge in the Spring semester. The program coordinators
are facilitating continuous positive changes to the materials and
logistics of the program.
