About the Project

Welcome to the Government Performance Project

The Government Performance Project focuses on effective public sector management.  The project is an unprecedented activity that sparks positive change in government management  and performance across the United States. Since 1996, the Government Performance Project has assessed the management capacity of all the states, the nation's 35 largest cities, and 40 large counties.

Thanks to a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and Governing Magazine have teamed to conduct extensive evaluations of state and local governments. The results are paying off! Governments around the nation are learning from each other what works to achieve better outcomes for citizens. The Government Performance Project demonstrates that robust management capacity enables strong performance.

A project funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts in partnership with Governing Magazine.
